Jin was raised to please the Emperor.  She was trained in things he liked and didn’t like.  She wanted nothing more than to spend her life pleasing him.  However, things did not necessarily go as planned.  In order to get her heart’s desire, she must risk her life and convince the Emperor to take a chance with his heart.

A few days ago, I had never heard of an author by the name of Joely Sue Burkhart.  A friend recommended a book that had recently come out by her, so I decided to check it out.  It took me a couple of days before I got a chance to sit down to read the book.  Now, I wish I had started it earlier.

This is a relatively short book.  It was a fast but enjoyable read for me.  There are some twists and turns that I did not expect.  The sex scenes were quite good and fit into the storyline.  The characters were interesting.  The book was set in China which was different for me.

While I enjoyed the book, I do feel the need to give one warning.  It is a BDSM themed novel that falls heavily towards the S&M side.  While not my preferred leaning, I did enjoy it in this situation.  There is blood, so if that squicks you out, I’d probably skip this one.  I did feel that some of the details could have been fleshed out a bit more.  I would have liked more of a connection with the characters overall.  However, with a book of this size, there’s not much room for more.  I think the book would have been better if it had been allowed to expand a bit more.

Overall, I do feel that this is a solid book if you want to escape for a little while.  I will be looking for more of Ms Burkhart’s books.  If you wish for more information about Golden and her other books, please feel free to check out her website.
